When we delete items let say; files or directories in our computer storage. Where do they go to be deposited?

Thanks for good answer, but my question is beyond deleting, for sure I meant permanently deleting of the itemes where they are no longer now in the either locations: recycle bin or trash.

I believe deleted file still resides within the computer hard drive, because I have seen people recovering deleted docs! This is an interesting question and hope someone will come up with clear explanations.

When you permanent delete file/folder in the computer it means you delete the address of that file/folder. since the computer understand the binary number means 0 and 1... the file/folder still remain in the computer but does not take any space because it has no address allocate to that file/folder..... <then when you use RECOVERY SOFTWARE means you give that file/ folder address again then it take place in the computer and it appear.
Good answer Janeth to mr John, but what erases completely the deleted files is to replace by another file which will replace tree like path which OS will be using to find the file otherwise deleted file will be held virtually but not visible to OS.
