PhD of Excellence at Rome Tor Vergata University
The Department of Mathematics of the University of Rome Tor Vergata has been ranked first in Italy among the Departments of Mathematics in the most recent Research Assessment Exercises, see for instance
https://www.mat.uniroma2.it/Docs/All6DE ... mmessi.pdf
The Department of Mathematics has hence benefited of an extra-funding for the period 2018-2022. These funds will be largely exploited for additional activities specifically addressed to PhD students, such as seminars, advanced courses, workshops, visiting professors; there is also specific extra-funding for students’ travels and scholarships.
Within this five-year Program of Excellence, five PhD positions have been funded for the academic year 2018-2019 with yearly gross salary of 24.000 Euros approximately plus travel allowance. Information for applications can be found on the PhD School web page at
https://www.mat.uniroma2.it/~dott/pagina2.html
The PhD program covers all areas of research in Pure and Applied Mathematics, including for instance Algebraic and Arithmetic Geometry, Number Theory, Complex Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Calculus of Variations and PDE, Operator Algebras and Quantum Field Theory, Nonlinear Analysis, Celestial Mechanics, Statistical Physics, Numerical Analysis, Probability and Mathematical Statistics. A more detailed presentation of the PhD school, including the full list of members of the PhD Board, can be found on the PhD School web page.
Our students can also benefit from strong interactions with the very lively mathematical community in Rome; there is indeed a mutual cooperation agreement with the Mathematics PhD programs run by Sapienza and Rome III University (http://www.rome-phd-math-programs.it/).

Postdoctoral Position(s) in 21cm Radio COSMOLOGY at McGill (CHIME project)
Here is a potential CHIME postdoctoral position at McGill: https://jobregister.aas.org/ad/9e84ffa9. This is an “off-cycle” ad where the successful candidate can begin almost immediately, but the exact start date is negotiable. This would primarily be a CHIME position, but depending on the candidate’s interests, there may be potential opportunities to collaborate on other 21cm projects (e.g., HIRAX, PRIZM, HERA—see the advertisement). Source: Adrian Liu, email him.

PhD Positions in Machine Learning at University of Colorado Boulder (US) and Inria (FR)
What?
We are offering PhD student positions in the field of machine learning. The positions include full tuition and a salary that is competitive with other PhD programs in the United States. PhD programs in the US typically take ∼5 years, which includes some coursework. Further information on the Computer Science PhD program at the University of
Colorado Boulder is here: https://www.colorado.edu/cs/current-stu ... udents/phd
This project concerns algorithm design and analysis for scaling up unsupervised and interactive learning to big data, with a particular focus on model-free
learning algorithms. In the era of Big Data, unsupervised learning has become increasingly important. At a high level, unsupervised learning serves to reduce the data size, while capturing important latent structure, such as features or clusters. This research thrust will address two topics: the unsupervised learning tasks of clustering (detecting clusters to summarize the data), and embedding (reducing the dimensionality at which the data is represented). An important sub-goal of this research thrust is to design algorithms for unsupervised learning from spatiotemporal data. A natural connection to real applications, such as problems in climate informatics, is anticipated.
Who?
This project is part of a new USA-France research collaboration, between Claire Monteleoni, who will join the University of Colorado Boulder as an Associate Professor
of Computer Science in August 2018, and Benjamin Guedj, who is a research scientist at Inria, France. The PhD student would therefore have access to collaborators and research facilities in both Boulder, Colorado, USA, and in Lille, France. It is envisioned that for example, the student could spend summers in France, etc. A successful student could potentially pursue a Postdoctoral with either of the mentors.

African Master's of Machine Intelligence at AIMS Rwanda - Kigali
By now, you must have heard about the exciting developments around Google's AI lab in Ghana, and a new AI Master's program in Rwanda...
Did you know that you can still apply for the new African Master's of Machine Intelligence at AIMS in Kigali? Starting this September?
It is a fully funded program. If accepted, you should just bring your brain, and buckets of enthusiasm. To apply, send a resume, transcripts, cover letter to ammi@nexteinstein.org
